Warren County Release Meaning
A Warren County release is an end to one agency's custody, but it is not always a return to the community. The Warren County Detention Center can release a person after bond, a pretrial order, dismissal, credit for time served, or completion of a local sentence. It can also transfer someone to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, another jail, federal authorities, or immigration custody. A transfer ends the Warren jail stay while confinement continues elsewhere. Death also ends a custody record and must not be described as an ordinary release.
State-prison terms create a different trail. A person leaving Warren Correctional Institution may enter post-release supervision or legacy parole, receive an unconditional discharge, or move to another prison. Probation is court-ordered community supervision, often used instead of active confinement. Parole is discretionary early release that mainly applies under older sentencing law. Post-release supervision is the required community part of many modern felony sentences. The record must be read with those distinctions in mind.
- Time served
- Credit for confinement that satisfies all or part of a sentence.
- Discharge
- An end to the custodial or correctional status shown by the responsible agency.
- Transfer
- A move between custodians, not freedom from custody.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that may cause another agency to take custody.
Note: A person can leave a prison cell while remaining under state authority in the community.
Warren County Release Record Fields
There is no single Warren County release certificate with one fixed format. The county-linked sheriff retention schedule describes active and inactive inmate incarceration records as a group. That group may contain an entry and release summary, arrest sheet, court commitment or release order, work-release material, pretrial-release agreements, and related nonmedical confinement records. A focused request is more useful than asking for every file connected to a name.
| Field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Booking or entry date | When the Warren jail stay began and which confinement event the record covers. |
| Release date and time | When Warren County custody ended, if the existing record includes the time. |
| Release manner | Bond, court order, time served, sentence completion, transfer, or another recorded outcome. |
| Order or commitment | The court or agency document that authorized confinement or release. |
| Destination | The receiving agency when departure was a transfer rather than community release. |
| Booking number | The identifier tying the release summary to the correct jail stay. |
| Booking photograph | A separate item that should be requested by name, booking, and date. |
For NCDAC custody, the public record is richer. It can show offender number, inmate and community-supervision status, admission, location and movement, conviction and sentence data, Actual Release Date, Projected Release Date, and parole dates. The dedicated state release result adds the type of release. An actual date paired with a compatible status is stronger proof than a projected date alone.
Request Warren County Release Records
The Warren County Sheriff's Office is the custodian for a county-jail exit. The official Sheriff page lists detention and administrative contacts but no online records form, fee table, set response time, or records-desk hours. Its lack of an online release search makes a precise phone inquiry and written request central to the local process.
The captured page confirms the official local contact route rather than a public roster or release feed.
- Call detention at 252-257-3314 and ask whether the person remains at the Warren County Detention Center. If not, ask whether departure was a release or transfer.
- Send a focused request to the Sheriff's Office at 132 Rafters Lane, Warrenton, NC 27589, or P.O. Box 678, Warrenton, NC 27589. Administration is 252-257-3364.
- Identify the person, approximate booking and release dates, and booking number when known. Ask for existing records, not a new report.
- Name the desired items: entry/release summary, date and time, release manner, order, public destination or receiving agency, and booking photograph.
- State that an electronic copy is acceptable. Preserve the agency response and its date because online status can change.
North Carolina Chapter 132 broadly defines public records, while G.S. 132-6 calls for inspection at reasonable times and copies as promptly as possible, subject to lawful fees and exceptions. The custodian need not create a new compilation. Criminal-investigation, juvenile, medical, confidential, sealed, or expunged material may be withheld or redacted. The county's schedule says inactive inmate incarceration files may be destroyed three years after release or transfer unless an audit, lawsuit, or other official-action hold prevents destruction.
Warren Release Orders in eCourts
Warren County joined eCourts on April 29, 2024. The eCourts Portal can be searched by party name, citation, or record number and filtered to Warren County. Open the matching criminal case and read the charge result, judgment, sentence, bond terms, and later orders. A dismissal, time-served judgment, suspended sentence, or bond order can explain why jail custody should end.
Yet “disposed” is a court status, not proof of the exact physical exit. A case may conclude while a prison term continues. A person may also leave prison while post-release supervision remains active. Pair court data with the Sheriff's release summary for a county-jail exit or with NCDAC status and dates for a state-prison discharge.
What if Portal lacks the needed Warren release order? Public terminals in clerk offices can search criminal case information. Paper files and copies are available through the Warren County Clerk at 109 S Main Street, Warrenton, NC 27589, 252-257-6300, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Note: Ask the clerk for the judgment, disposition, bond order, or order that changed or ended probation.
Expunction and Warren Release Records
An eligible Warren County expunction petition is filed with the Warren County Clerk because filing belongs in the county of charge or conviction. Expunction can remove an arrest, charge, or conviction from public court access. It is not a release event and cannot prove when custody ended. A missing case after a known jail stay may reflect the legal removal of the public record rather than an error in the search.
The North Carolina expunction process lists a general petition fee of $175, with exceptions that include many dismissed or not-guilty matters. Processing can take months. If court-system information remains a few weeks after an order, the granting clerk is the proper contact. Private reposts do not vanish at once, so an old image or report may survive after official access changes. Waiting periods depend on the statute and case. No single three-year rule applies to every expunction.
Article 5 and G.S. 15A-150 govern notice and destruction or sealing. G.S. 15A-152 provides an update or deletion path for certain private compilers after official notice. Keep a copy of an expunction order because a clerk may not later be able to supply a record that the law required to be destroyed.
Find Warren County Released Inmates
Start with the last likely custodian. A local arrest or short county sentence points to the Warren County Detention Center. A felony prison term points to NCDAC. A federal conviction points to the Bureau of Prisons, while documented immigration custody points to ICE. Searching the wrong system can produce a valid no-result that says nothing about release.
Important: Warren County publishes no official live jail roster or recent-release feed. A missing name cannot prove community release, transfer, or the reason custody ended.
- Call Warren detention first for a county-jail case. Ask whether the person is still held and whether departure was release or transfer.
- Request the inactive county incarceration record for a durable release date, manner, order, and destination if public.
- Search NCDAC when state prison or community supervision is possible. Compare actual and projected dates, status, office, location, and movement.
- Read the Warren eCourts case for the judicial basis. Do not treat a disposed case as the physical release record.
- Use NC SAVAN for a reported event and alerts, then confirm the reporting agency and corroborate the result.
- Use BOP or ICE only for the matching federal or immigration path. Older or unclear results may require agency records.
For an older matter, durable records matter most. Use the sheriff's inactive file while retained, the clerk's judgment and orders, NCDAC's historical OPI data, or a federal records request. VINE and ICE are event-oriented systems, not permanent archives. A same-day Warren inquiry still follows the local phone and records fallback because no official county feed exists.
Warren Released Offender Search
The NCDAC Offender Public Information search covers current and historical state offenders and people on probation, parole, or post-release supervision back to 1972. It does not contain county-jail-only records. Search by status, name, or seven-digit offender number. Optional tools include Soundex, sex, race, ethnicity, exact or ranged birth date, and age range. Use an offender number when possible, compare identity fields, and open the full record.
The search screen shows why state custody and supervision require more than a name-only query.
| OPI field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Status filter | Use All, Inactive, Active Inmate, or Active Probationer/Parolee as the case requires. |
| Name and Soundex | Search exact identity first; Soundex can help with a spelling variation. |
| Offender number | A seven-digit identifier is the strongest public search key when known. |
| Inmate status | Shows custody or a status such as POST RELEASE/PAROLE. |
| Supervision status and office | Shows whether community supervision is active and which office is associated with it. |
| Actual Release Date | Records the realized state correctional release event. |
| Projected Release Date | A forecast that can change and must not be treated as an accomplished release. |
The dedicated NCDAC Inmate Release Search uses county, year, and month or a last name. Warren is county code 93. Its results show offender number, name, release date, primary offense, and type of release. It is a state correctional release list, not a list of all people leaving the Warren County Detention Center. The visible year selector covered a rolling three-calendar-year range when researched.
Verify Warren State Release Status
An NCDAC record should be read as a set. Inmate Status “POST RELEASE/PAROLE” with active community supervision and a listed office supports release from prison into supervised community status. Actual Release Date records an event, while Projected Release Date remains a forecast. Current and previous location, last movement, and sentence service status help distinguish discharge from a transfer.
The manifest-matched public offender record captured during research shows the actual and projected release fields in their real context. The image is presented for field orientation, not to draw any new conclusion about a named person.
The record layout reinforces why date, location, sentence, and supervision fields must be checked together.
If the public detail remains unclear, use the NCDAC public-record request. Basic conviction, time served, sentence length, admission, and release dates may be public, but detailed offender and supervision files can be confidential. NCDAC holds state prison and community-supervision records, not Warren County jail files.
Note: A different NCDAC prison in the location field means transfer and continued custody, not community release.
Warren Release Alerts and Supervision
NC SAVAN through VINELink can report person-specific custody events and offer phone, text, or email alerts. State policy says SAVAN is linked to the OPUS correctional database and includes projected release, release with supervision, and release without supervision among state-prison events. It also says county jails use SAVAN, but the reviewed material did not prove Warren's current participation facility by facility. Always read the reporting agency on the matching record.
The person-search view is an event and notification channel, not a certified archive of every Warren County release.
Probation, parole, and post-release supervision are checked in OPI by reading both the community status and displayed office. Warren belongs to Community Supervision Judicial District 9 with Franklin, Granville, and Vance counties. The district office in Louisburg is a contact point, not proof that each Warren supervisee reports there. The individual OPI office field should control when confirming the assigned reporting site.
Does a SAVAN no-result prove release? No. It can reflect spelling, identifiers, reporting participation, data lag, or historical limits. Confirm the event through the Sheriff or NCDAC.
Warren Federal Release Lookup
The Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator is the right first tool for a federal prisoner, generally for records after 1982. Search by full name with a middle initial when known or by federal identifier. Results can show name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. A past date with no facility, or Location “RELEASED,” means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not rule out federal supervision, parole, state or local custody, or immigration custody.
The locator is separate from Warren Sheriff and NCDAC records, so it should be used only for a federal custody trail.
A future BOP date is projected. “UNKNOWN” means the confinement term has not been determined, and “IN TRANSIT” can include a United States Marshals Service move. BOP updates the locator daily. A no-result may reflect a state or local case, a spelling issue, a different identifier, or a record before the locator's normal time span. Older records may require the National Archives, while added federal detail can be requested through BOP FOIA.
Warren Immigration Release Checks
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only when an ICE hold or transfer is documented. It searches a nine-digit A-number plus country, with leading zeros added when needed, or exact first and last name plus date of birth and country. Official ICE material says the tool can cover current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the past 60 days, subject to safety limits, omissions, and entry lag.
The official ICE limitation explanation is captured in the matching manifest image. It shows why a recent released result can help, but disappearance after the stated window cannot prove anything about the older event.
The ICE path remains conditional because no official source established an ICE detention contract at the Warren County Detention Center.
Release from ICE custody may include reporting terms and does not end the immigration case. The United States Marshals Service has no comparable public person locator for federal pretrial custody. A federal court docket, USMS contact or FOIA request, or later BOP record may resolve that trail. Lack of a public USMS result is not evidence of release.
Warren Release Status by Custodian
The same person may appear in more than one system over time. Use the source that matches the custody stage, and then compare it with the legal record. No one missing name should carry the whole conclusion.
| Situation | Best Warren County source | What confirms the result |
|---|---|---|
| Possibly still in county jail | Call Warren detention | Direct custody answer; no official web roster exists. |
| Released from county jail | Sheriff inactive incarceration record | Release date, manner, order, and destination if recorded and public. |
| State prison or supervision | NCDAC OPI and release search | Actual date read with status, movement, location, and supervision office. |
| Reported custody event | NC SAVAN | Matching identity and reporting agency, corroborated by the custodian. |
| Federal sentence | BOP locator | Past release date and released/no-facility location meaning. |
| Recent ICE release | ICE locator | Recent released result within the limited public window. |
Note: Court disposition explains the legal basis, but the responsible jail or corrections system records the custody event.
Getting Home After Warren Release
Warren County is served by KARTS, a public rural transportation system providing scheduled or reserved rides in Warren, Franklin, Granville, and Vance counties. Its published numbers are 252-438-2573 and 1-800-682-4329. Advance contact is essential. Neither KARTS nor the Sheriff documents an automatic jail-release shuttle, a stop at 132 Rafters Lane, or a ride timed to a person's release.
The Sheriff also does not publish release-processing hours, an exit door, a family waiting point, property-return steps, or weekend and holiday procedures. Do not infer those details from another county. Call detention before travel, confirm whether the person is actually being released to the community, and ask only for logistics the facility can provide. A transfer to NCDAC or another custodian calls for a new custody search, not transportation from the jail.
Warren Prison Release Trail
Warren Correctional Institution opened in 1997 and consolidated five smaller prisons in nearby counties. Official history records building additions through 2004. That local history helps explain why someone tied to Warren County can have a state-prison release trail rather than a county-jail record.
The official facility page identifies the NCDAC institution, while OPI remains the better source for a named person's transfer, discharge, or supervised release.
The same official page contains conflicting capacity and custody descriptions: metadata says medium/minimum custody and 672 capacity, while narrative text refers to close custody and 809 capacity. Neither figure is a release count. The conflict should remain visible rather than being resolved by guesswork, and it does not change the verification method.
Warren County Release Facilities
Two facilities in Warren County produce very different release records. The Warren County Detention Center is the county-jail path for local bookings, pretrial detention, and qualifying local sentences. Community release is confirmed through the Sheriff's inactive incarceration record, supported by the Warren court case and a SAVAN event when available. A transfer must be traced to the receiving custodian.
Warren County Detention Center: local jail at 132 Rafters Lane, Warrenton; detention line 252-257-3314 and the Sheriff's inactive incarceration record.
Warren Correctional Institution: NCDAC men's prison at 379 Collins Road, Manson; facility phone 252-598-5400 and the statewide OPI record.
For Warren Correctional Institution, search NCDAC OPI for current and prior locations, last movement, inmate status, supervision status, and actual release date. A new prison location is a transfer. An actual release date with a compatible noncustody status may support discharge, while POST RELEASE/PAROLE with an active office indicates community supervision.
